Matt Roush sagt Fans: Relax!

Über die Negativität und so:

Question: I've been a longtime fan of Joss Whedon and frequently visit the many boards dedicated to his shows. I am finding with greater frequency links and discussions of stories about fans and their fears for his upcoming show on Fox called Dollhouse. If one was to believe the few that get quoted in many of these articles, one would think the entire fandom was waiting for the axe to fall 15 minutes into the airing of the first episode. I'm finding the opposite to be true. Most are actually tired of hearing others a panic about the fate of a show they haven't seen yet. (I know I am.) In this day, it seems perception is everything, and I for one would think it a shame for people to not bother to tune in because they've been reading for months that not even the fans have faith that the show will last more than a few episodes. My question is, do you think maybe the articles written claiming the entire fandom is resigned to lose another show too soon are having a negative impact on the potential for Dollhouse to succeed? -- HGP

Matt Roush: I don't even know how to respond to this sort of twisted fan logic, that fans are upset because fans are concerned that fans are already giving up on a show that is still months away from premiering. I think fans should relax. It is almost always a mistake to judge a show by its early buzz, and Dollhouse suffers for having been in the pipeline a long while and having undergone a fair amount of widely reported retooling. There's reason to be skeptical (given the history with Firefly) that Fox may not live up to its end of the bargain, but look how supportive the network has been to Fringe so far, a show that has been exhibiting its growing pains on air, which is possibly even more perilous than what Dollhouse is currently experiencing. In a recent interview with Television Week, the heads of the studio that produces Dollhouse were asked about the status of the show, and 20th co-chair Dana Walden admitted, "The midseason opportunity is a blessing and curse. It's a blessing because you have more time. And it's a curse because you have more time. There's a greater level of scrutiny. There is a greater level of intrusion from executives. The bar just keeps being raised because there's no urgency to put the show on the air. ? Being stuck in that limbo with a lot of well-intentioned executives is very difficult for a creator like Joss." She added that the first two episodes "are quite good. The third episode is as compelling a script as I've ever read." So while there's no doubt that Dollhouse is a risk for the studio and the network, everyone involved desperately wants to be in business with Joss, and my advice is to let them roll the dice without getting overly agitated in advance.

Dazu der whedonesque-Kommentar des Tages:

I reckon now's the time to start a backlash against the backlash to the backlash, just for a bit of variety.

Amy Acker im SciFi-Wire

Interview über den Hiatus:

"You know, we did take a little break," Acker said in an interview earlier this month. "And I feel like it's coming back, and everyone is just excited to be there. The first show that came back was a Steve DeKnight show; he was directing it, and it's just really, really great. I think we just kind of had that time, because it doesn't air until January."

Soso, Folge 1x04 also eine DeKnight-Folge!

Dr. Horrible CD & DVD ab nächster Woche, nein doch erst "bald" vorbestellbar

Sagt Produzent Michael Boretz im Interview:

BW: It would be a very different world if everyone worked the way Joss works. With the sales of the show and soundtrack on iTunes, can you say if you are in the black?

MB: I haven’t seen the books but things are moving in the right direction.

BW: There is always some risk when entering new territory the way this was released, but I’m sure the fans and Joss have faith that you’ll prevail very shortly with the stellar sales on iTunes. Can you comment on when the DVD or CD-based soundtrack may be available?

MB: Both the DVD and CD should be available for pre-order on Amazon next week and hopefully will be shipping by late November.

Edit: Offenbar doch erst "in the near future", wie der Artikel nun behauptet.

Gestern: Schießerei

1x05 "Man on The Street" ist ja noch immer in Produktion, und jemand im imdb-Forum hat uns geflüstert, derzeit schießen sie in seiner/ihrer Nachbarschaft. Also sie schießen ne Schießerei:

They're planning on filming a gunfight across my street (visible from one of my building's windows, easily) for Dollhouse in a couple days; my building had a notification up (as they often do) so people would avoid calling the police if they saw people with weapons and heard automatic gunfire and/or explosions.

Wham, bam, zam, sham, I don't really give a damn. In Wirklichkeit sieht nämlich alles so aus:

I doubt Fox will move Dollhouse away from Mondays, they'll still want to give it the best possible chance of success by pairing it with 24. The Fox midseason schedule is always overcrowed because of the return of 24 and two nights of American Idol. This year is no different. Fox has managed that problem in the past by having some of its fall shows take a hiatus until later in the spring. For example, Prison Break went on haitus in December while a new show used its timeslot, and then returned later in the spring (March) to air its remaining 9 episodes. Unless Fox plans on using the low-rated PB and Terminator as filler for Friday nights, I suspect they will use the same strategy as in the past. The new shows like Dollhouse, which usually only have 13 episodes which isn't enough to last from Jan-May, will premiere early. Then when their 13 episode run is over the old shows like PB and Terminator will return, or they'll return earlier if any of the new shows are cancelled quickly.

There's too much media attention surrounding Dollhouse for Fox to try to bury it, even if they are worried about its direction, which I'm not convinced they are. Plus, haven't they already sold it to advertisers as part of that fewer-commercials experiment (along with Fringe)? Fox will want Dollhouse to do as well as possible to make those advertisers happy and for the experiment to be a success, especially since it seems to already be working for Fringe.

The network recently ordered two scripts of the show, so perhaps the stories came in strong. Midseason sci-fi drama "Dollhouse" might be another factor -- Fox's previously announced winter schedule pairs "Dollhouse" and "24" on Mondays and "American Idol" and "Fringe" on Tuesdays, without "Terminator" listed. So perhaps the network has a new scheduling configuration in mind to support its sci-fi efforts.

Yet another potential factor is that "Dollhouse" has had some creative struggles. Sources say the newer scripts are stronger than the first batch, but if there's any chance of the show being delayed Fox might have decided to keep "Terminator" in the mix.

Very Spoiler, of course.

1x05 "Man on The Street" derzeit in Produktion

Endlich die Bestätigung für bereits Vermutetes: 1x05 "Man on The Street" ist derzeit in Produktion. End of Show hat Infos darüber, wie auch über den Theme Song, und die derzeit in Paris Cannes laufenden Screenings:

Dollhouse - Currently finishing up the new cut of it’s pilot in post, and filming episode 5 in West Hollywood. The show now has a 30 second introduction title sequence now which introduces the key players and sets the tone (our take: being disconnected from the world, even if you are walking around like an action hero - with a hint of creepy). Expect Joss Whedon fans to be singing ”What you don’t know won’t hurt you. Maybe the lies are true?” at you in January. It screened in Paris to networks over the last 3 days, and has two further unscheduled screenings today (Oct 16) at 9am and 2.30pm.

Was das wohl heißen mag?

Whedonverse Crossover des Tages

Pretty cunning, dontcha think?

Erste Theme-Song Kritik

gossi (wer sonst?) meint:

It's a little twisted, and rather awesome.

So sorry for the current delay. Just a few days ago, Buffy #19 should have been on sale, and it is not. We all just slipped -- after a very good stint of getting the book out on time. Was it the magic combination of putting the Fray team back together right when Joss was launching a new TV show that did us in? I'm not saying.

Dafür gibt's dann 25 Seiten, statt den üblichen 22. Wie schon bei 8x10 "Anywhere But Here", dem bisherigen Meisterwerk dieser Staffel.

Tim Minear Q&A
