We understand what works, and what didn't work so well or what we weren't so thrilled about. We don't have the onus of trying to be a big hit sitting on our shoulders. We can just be ourselves. And so the stories we're breaking are pure, and exciting, and everybody's on-board in the room, and it's never flowed better."

DOLLHOUSE will have a presence at this year’s COMIC-CON in San Diego as series creator/writer/director and executive producer Joss Whedon and star/producer Eliza Dushku will appear at a special 2-hour DOLLHOUSE session on Friday, July 24 (exact time TBC) where audience members will have the first opportunity to watch an exclusive screening of “Epitaph One” (which will be included on the Dollhouse Season One DVD released) and then open the floor for a Q & A about their thoughts on the series’ freshman year and what they have planned for the upcoming season two.

Wer sich gewundert hat, als Elisabeth Craft & Sarah Fain gegen Ende der erste Lie to Me-Staffel als Consulting Producers auftauchten (und dort das ehrlich beste script der Staffel, jenes für Folge 12 beisteuerten), erhält nun Aufklärung: Scheinbar haben Craft & Fain Dollhouse nach Staffel 1 verlassen, und jetzt wo Lie to Me Staffel 2 von Shawn Ryan (Angel-Veteran und später dann The Shield-Chef und somit Kollaborateur von Craft & Fain) geführt werden wird, entschieden sie sich wohl dort zu bleiben.

IGN berichtet, dass dies rauskam bei ihrem Nachfragen bezüglich den von Maurissa Tancharoen verkündeten neuen Dollhouse-Schreiberlingen Michele Fazekas und Tara Butters. Die beiden übernehmen die Craft & Fain-Plätze im writer's room, ob sie ihre Rolle als Co-Executive Producers oder gar Showrunners auch übernehmen werden, ist noch unbekannt.

Fazekas und Butter haben die CW-Dramedy Reaper erfunden und zwei Staffeln lang geführt. Reaper wurde vor kurzem abgesetzt, und die beiden traten in einen allgemeinen development deal mit 20th Century Fox Television ein, in dessen Rahmen sie nun auch bei Dollhouse mitarbeiten.

In diesem Artikel, der sich der Frage widmet, warum serielle Shows mehr Kritiker-Lob, prozedurale aber längerfristigen Erfolg bekommen, kommen etliche Serien-Macher zu Wort, auch Joss:

Meanwhile, Joss Whedon emphasizes that his Fox show, " Dollhouse," is not a procedural -- though he admits it may have seemed that way early on. When asked if he was encouraged by the network to make his show a procedural, he offers a different situation than Abrams': "We were encouraged . . . if you can call shutting us down encouragement. The mission statement is 'do stand-alone, do stand-alone, do stand-alone' and 'as much as possible, make it easy on the audience; don't get involved.' But doing a straight procedural -- that's not something that occurs to my brain."

So detailliert (kritisch) hat er den Shutdown glaub ich noch nie beschrieben. Dass er an den stand-alone Aspekt der ersten 5 Folgen gebunden war, wurde glaub ich bisher auch nicht wirklich expliziert.

Nach Capt. Hammer und Moist erhält nun auch Penny ein Prequel-Comic auf dem Dark Horse Myspace. Wieder geschrieben von Zack Whedon himself, ist es das süßeste bisher, behaupte ich mal.

BLAST: Do you ever feel that the show is too risque?

ED: No. I have three older brothers, and they saw the whole dominatrix opener one day and were like “really sis? Really?” but, you know, it’s part of the “we give the people what they want” on the show, and they want that.

BLAST: What are you looking forward to in season two?

ED: I feel like we really found a groove toward the end of the season and we just have so many stories that we want to tell and so many places we want to go and now we just get that chance and now we just get to make the show we want to make.

BLAST: Is there someplace new you want to go with the show in season two?

ED: There’s a little bit less of the dumbed-down doll and a little more of this young woman now being able to figure out what she’s going to do.

BLAST: What personality of Alpha’s — I think, what, 38 of them? — which was most fun to play?

AT: Well… I think it’s forty–well, I’ve been saying 42 but I think it’s 48. It’s tough to know. (laughs) The only one, you know… It’s interesting doing episodic television, because you can’t peer around the corner. When I was doing the episode of “Briar Rose,” I didn’t know where Alpha was going in “Omega.” I knew that I was taking her… but I didn’t even know what I was taking her to do. (laughs) I didn’t know why I was taking her until the day after we ran “Briar Rose” and I read the script for “Omega.”

BLAST: You kind of had to play it by ear then.

AT: There are a couple of things that happened with the performance. It was like, wow, this guy talks a great deal. He always speaks quickly and he doesn’t ever want to stop talking! There are a lot of lines to learn. But also, I knew that he had 48 people in him, but I didn’t realize that it was just a riot of people, of difficult, zany folks. If I had to do it over again I would have brought more personalities out in the first one. (hesitates) Eh, I don’t want to say I have regrets, but I — I don’t know who all the personalities are. And there’s Kepler, you know whoever that is, whatever personality he’s using there. But that was kind of, you know, Alpha was doing a little acting, also.

Ein lesenswerter Anriss von Gothic-Themen im Dollhouse:

But Gothic houses are all about secrets, and the Dollhouse is crawling with them. Much of season one is the progressive revelation of a traumatic event in the series’ past, when one of the dolls went berserk, slaughtered a bunch of people with only a kitchen knife, and escaped. In the aftermath, the Dollhouse ticks along, but no matter how hard the staff tries, it can’t quite resume perfect equilibrium, perfect control. There are always flaws, secrets, hidden agendas, traces of imperfection.

"Epitaph One" wurde ja schon auf HD Video gedreht, und nicht auf Film, wie der Rest der ersten Staffel, und scheinbar ist diese Einsparungsmaßnahme tatsächlich für die gesamte zweite Staffel übernommen worden. Auf einem Vortrag an seiner Heimat-Uni Wesleyan, den Joss vor kurzem gehalten hat, haben Leute folgendes gehört:

Budgets have been cut, and he’ll be shooting in HD video instead of film.

Dies heißt mehr düstere, dreckige Footage, was ich (vermutlich) stark begrüße. Die Drehbuch-Arbeit an Season 2 fängt übrigens diese Woche an.

E! Online hat sie kurz über die neue Staffel befragt. Keine Spoilers, nur Vorfreude und Dankbarkeit.

Es tut sich wieder einiges in der Gerüchteküche. Der writer's room für Season 2 beginnt nächste Woche mit dem Arbeiten. Tim Minear, Maurissa Tancharoen, und (laut Maurissa) die beiden Neulinge Andrew Chambliss ("A Spy in The House of Love" FTW!) und Tracy Bellomo ("Needs" FTW!) sind wieder mit dabei, was mich sehr freut, denn üblicherweise wird zwischen Season 1 und 2 gerne viel und alles junge gefeuert. Jane Espenson und Steven DeKnight dürften ja nicht mehr wiederkommen, da sie eigene Shows zum laufen haben.
